El veintinueve de enero/January 29th
¡Feliz cumpleaños a ... Cristina Saralegui! (1948- )
Cristina Saralegui is best-known for her Spanish-language talk show, El Show de Cristina, which aired for 21 years on Univisión (click HERE to see her 2009 interview with Shakira, and HERE to see an excerpt of her 1994 interview with Selena). Often compared to Oprah Winfrey (with whom she shares a birthday), Sarelegui also has a magazine (Crisina: La Revista), a radio show, and a furniture line. Born in Havana, Cuba, Sarelegui fled Cuba with her family in 1960 after the Revolution. She was twelve. After graduating high school in Miami (and perfecting her English), she attended the University of Miami. An internship with Vanidades, a magazine that her grandfather, a publisher and businessman, had founded in Cuba, helped her perfect her written Spanish (which she had lost focusing on English in high school) and paved the way for her next job as editor of the Spanish-language version of Cosmopolitan. After nearly ten years in that post, she started her Miami-based show. Over the years, she interviewed stars such as Celia Cruz, Enrique Iglesias, Julio Iglesias (Enrique's father), Gloria Estefan, Pitbull, Jorge Ramos, Gloria Trevi, and Jennifer López. She ended every show with a thumbs up and the Cuban expression: (Forward, forward, backwards not even to gain momentum). Married to Marcos Avila, a former member of the Miami Sound Machine, since 1982, Saralegui has three children (a daughter from her first marriage, a stepdaughter from her marriage to Avila, and a son with him). Together Avila and Saralegui founded Arriba la Vida, a foundation that offers AIDS education to the Hispanic community. In 2005 Saralegui was named one of the "25 Most Influential Hispanics in America" by Time Magazine (click HERE to read the profile). She and her husband live in Miami, Florida.
