A Mexican-American boxer nicknamed "Golden Boy" who fought professionally from 1992-2008, he won a gold medal for the United States in the 1992 Summer Olympics as a lightweight boxer shortly  after graduating from high school. He was named "Fighter of the Year" by The Ring magazine in 1995 and the 16th best boxer of all time by BoxRec. In 2002 he founded Golden Boy Promotions, a national boxing promotional company. He also has several other business ventures including being part-owner of a major league soccer team and launching a clothing line (click HERE to read more (in English)). De la Hoya was born in East Los Angeles to Mexican parents, and he speaks about the challenges he faced growing up in this 2008 interview with Jorge Ramos (in Spanish), including losing his mother to breast cancer in 1991, when he was only 18. Also, while some have challenged him for "not being Mexican enough," De la Hoya counters in the Ramos interview: "Yo nací en este país y estoy yo muy orgulloso de ser americano ...Este país me dio la oportunidad y por esto estoy muy agradecido. Pero mis raíces ... mi sangre es mexicana. Yo estoy muy orgulloso de tener sangre mexicana, papás mexicanos..." (I was born in this country and I am very proud of being American. This country gave me opportunity and for that I am very grateful. but my roots ... my blood is Mexican. I am very proud of my Mexican heritage, of my Mexican parents ... ). De la Hoya has been married to Puerto Rican singer Millie Corretjer since 2001, and the two have two children together, Oscar (December 2005) and Nina (December 2007). He also has three children from previous relationships. De la Hoya's life is not without controversy, and he has entered rehab on several occasions.
