Known as "one of the most significant drummers of our time," Lombardo was born in Havana, Cuba in 1965, just six years after the Revolution and Fidel Castro's coming to power. His two older brothers were sent to the United States with Operation Peter Pan, and Lombardo and his parents followed when he was just 14 months old. There, his parents took him to Latin social clubs, where he was soon obsessed with the bands. He first performed on bongos along with a Santana record for his 3rd grade class show and tell. Bigger performances soon followed. Lombardo is known for founding the heavy metal rock band Slayer. He has been nominated three times for a Grammy, and won twice. In January of 2018, he returned to Cuba for the first time.
