¡Feliz cumpleaños a ... Jorge Villamil! (1929-2010)

An award-winning Colombian composer and songwriter who was also a practicing doctor for many years, Jorge Villamil was born in the countryside of Colombia in 1929, the only boy of seven children. He grew up on a large farm, an experience that greatly influenced his music. He graduated with a doctorate in medicine with a specialization in orthopedic surgery in 1958 and began to practice medicine while writing music on the side. In 1965 he married Olga Lucia Ospina, and they had two children together, Jorge and Ana María. The family then moved to Mexico City in Mexico, where Villamil met many famous artists who influenced his career as a musician. In 1976, Villamil decided to stop practicing medicine in order to fully focus on music, which he considered "medicine for the soul." He has received numerous awards, including The Association of Latin Entertainment Critics ACE - Composer of the Year (1978), Hollywood Gold Palm (1969), Carnegie Hall - Latin Recognition (1977), and Human Values Award by the Organization of American States, United Nation Recognition (1985), in addition to his many awards and recognitions inside Colombia.
