¡Feliz cumpleaños a ... Isabel Allende! (1942-      )

I can promise you that women working together - linked, informed and educated - can bring peace and prosperity to this forsaken planet. -Isabel Allende

A Chilean writer whose 23 books have been translated into 35 languages and have sold more than 70 million copies, she has won more than 60 awards for her writing in 16 different countries (source: isabelallende.com). Her father's cousin was Salvador Allende, the Chilean president who was assassinated in a CIA backed coup in 1973, and she herself lived in Venezuela in exile for 13 years after the coup. Allende wrote her first novel in 1981 after receiving a phone call that her grandfather was near death. She sat down to write him a letter, and the letter turned into House of Spirits, which was first published in Spain and eventually translated into many different languages. Allende had two children with her first husband, Miguel Frías: daughter Paula (1963) and  son Nicolás (1966). Paula died in 1992 after falling into a coma from complications from the disease porphyria. Allende wrote the book Paula (1995), a tribute to her, during the year that she spent by her bedside. She published her memoir, The Sum of Our Days, in 2008. Allende has lived in California since 1989 (she met second husband, attorney Willie Gordon, there in 1988), and she became an American citizen in 1993. Most of her family (son Nicolás with his family) lives near her. She had received many honorary degrees, including an honorary Doctor of Letters from Harvard University in 2014.
