A Venezuelan fashion model, beauty pageant winner, and college student who was killed while protesting the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela in 2014, Carmona became a symbol of the crisis in Venezuela after a photo of her being rushed to the hospital
on a friend's motorcycle after being shot was seen around the world. Carmona was killed by pro-government chavistas who showed up to the peaceful protest and began firing into the crowd. Nicolás Maduro did offer condolences to Carmona's family and loved ones, but then he went on to say that the bullet that killed her came from one of the protestors, not from outside pro-government supporters. In 2014, Carmona's mother and sister moved to the United States seeking political asylum. Click HERE to see their press conference in Miami announcing their decision.
