An Olympic swimmer from Venezuela who won Venezuela's first World Championship medal in 2007, Subirats was born in Valencia, Carabobo (in Venezuela) and originally loved soccer, but asthma forced him to turn to swimming at the age of 13. By the age of 17, he had won a swimming scholarship to the University of Arizona, where he became a three time individual NCAA champion (the 100 yd fly in 2006 and 2007, his junior and senior years, and the 100 yd backstroke his senior year). Nicknamed "El Tornado," he has represented Venezuela in the Olympics three times, in 2004, 2008, and 2012. He currently lives and works in Miami. See him interviewed (in Spanish) HERE.
