A Chilean astronomer, Ruiz was the first woman to successfully study astronomy at the University of Chile, the first woman scientist to receive her PhD from Princeton University (in 1975), and the first woman to win Chile's National Prize for Exact Sciences. The oldest of four children who lived in a house with her parents and grandparents growing up, Ruiz says that she always enjoyed finding "lo extraordinario en el ordinario." After receiving her PhD from Princeton, Ruiz completed research in Trieste, Mexico and New York City before being awarded a Guggenheim fellowship. She is now a professor at the University of Chile. She calls it the responsibility of every human being to contribute to the avance de la humanidad. Click HERE to see her talk (in Spanish) #LasNiñasPueden. In 2017, Ruiz won the L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for women in science.
