A professional baseball player (pitcher) from the Dominican Republic who played between 1992 and 2009, Martínez is an 8-time All-Star and 3-time Cy Young Award Winner. He this excellent 2015 profile from Sports Illustrated).
was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015, his first year of eligibility. He won the World Series in 2004 with the Red Sox (their first title in 86 years). One of six children growing up in a small house in the town of Manoguayabo, D.R., Martínez often climbed a mango tree in his backyard for solitude when his parents were fighting (they divorced when he was 6 -- Martínez would help them come back together on more positive terms later in his life). He also inherited a love for gardening from his mother, who tended to flowers at the house. When he was 16 and only 137 pounds, despite being told he was too small to ever be a major league pitcher, Martínez followed his brother Ramón to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball camp (Ramón would turn pro later that year). When Pedro turned pro, he gave his entire $6500 signing bonus to his brother, and even when he had surpassed his brother's accomplishments later in his career, Pedro Martínez would say of his brother: "I will always look up to him. That will never change." Known for his generosity (often without a press release), Martínez spent the Millenium New Year's Eve at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic a friend had told him about. He has also built schools, churches, houses, and playgrounds (read more in
Martínez ended his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 on a 1-year 1 million dollar contract. In 2011, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery acquired an oil-painting of him for its collection (see it and read about it here). In 2015, he released his autobiography, Pedro. Martínez is married to former ESPN reporter Carolina Cruz and the two have four children together. One son, Pedro Martínez Jr., signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2017.
